Paul Casey US Masters Golfers
Another Englishman who is causing quite a stir in both Europe and the States is Paul Casey. He is probably the most naturally exciting of all the emerging stars, as he has the ability to marry explosive power with low scores. His awe inspiring 66 in the second round at Oakmont was something to behold. The US Open course is a renowned card-destroyer.
His biggest enemy is his inconsistency - he too often fires poor rounds after his winners. At the US Open he shot a 72 and a 76 to follow the mouth watering 66. His top ten finishes at the Masters and the US Open in 2007 however show his pedigree - now it’s just a matter of claiming a Major.
The 30-year-old had a very auspicious start to his golf career. As an amateur he was the first man to win three consecutive Pac-10 Championships, and then he went on to break the championship scoring record held by none other than Tiger Woods. He had a fabulous outing at the 1999 Walker Cup breaking a seventy-year-old record for four victories without one defeat! The man was on the move.
In 2001, his debut year on the European Tour, he picked up the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award and in 2003 claimed the sixth place on the Order of Merit. He was a member of the victorious Ryder Cup Team in 2004, and then with Luke Donald, he went on to win the WGC World Cup for England.
Casey is also known for his disparaging comments about Americans prior to the World Cup. He lost his Titleist sponsorship because he was quoted as saying: “Oh, we properly hate them. We wanted to beat them as badly as possible.” Was it gamesmanship or was he indeed misquoted as he claims.
Paul Casey, US Masters golfer? He has shown his talent but he has to learn to keep his cool and shoot consistent rounds regularly. It is the only way to sustain a serious challenge to the likes of Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Retief Goosen.
